You may not realize it, but you’re most likely missing out on potential dates because your profile photos are not sending out the right signals.
The dating site blog OkTrends analyzed over 7,000 photos from users on OKCupid. Their aim was to garner a better understanding as to which types of profile photo are the most effective at increasing profile views.
I’ve summarized their findings into these 5 simple photo tips…
1. Smiling and Eye Contact
Even if you’re a very jolly and happy person, smiling in your photos is not necessarily your best bet for more profile views. OkCupid’s data revealed that women who made eye contact and looked directly into the camera, received more views with a ‘flirty face’ than a big smile. But don’t discount the smile completely, on the whole, smiling is still better than not smiling for women. For men, photos that attract the most viewers are those where the man is looking away from the camera, and not smiling. And the second best for men? Smiling, but without the eye contact.
2. Camera Angle
You know those self-shot style photos? You may think they are complete and utter cheese, but in fact, they are surprisingly one of the most effective types of profile photo for both men and women. For women, they even work better than displaying large amounts of cleavage.
3. Showing a Little More Skin
The male abs shot has a pretty poor reputation, with everyone thinking that it’s for bozos only. However, OKCupid’s data tells a different story… For young men with chiseled abs, body shots do help to attract more views and messages, than men who leave their shirts on. However, the effectiveness of the abs shot decreases significantly with age. If you’re over 25, you’ll be better off keeping the shirt on.
Despite most “experts” recommending woman not to show too much cleavage, everyone knows that breasts get an awful lot of attention. OkCupid found that for women, showing more, is in fact very successful indeed, with cleavage shots receiving 49% more views than average.
For both sexes however, if you’re looking for a serious relationship, revealing lots of skin is not really advised.
4. To Show the Face or Not?
Many dating sites insist that users show their face in their profile photos. In fact, some dating sites will even reject photos that don’t show your face. But now the OKCupid research figures are in, and the results reveal that showing your face or not, has in fact very little affect on your profile views and messages. Actually, sometimes not showing your face, and instead letting the photo do all the work can be a positive. Providing you substitute it with something interesting, sexy or unusual, to create a little curiosity in the viewers mind.
5. Do Something Interesting
Are your photos really interesting? Because according to OkCupid, the top three photo contexts that lead to an increase in profile views and messages are: 1) Doing something interesting, 2) With animals, 3) Travel photos. But remember, pets are for life, not just to help you get a date 😉
