In this review I’m going to be taking a look at mysinglefriend.com, a UK dating site with a slight twist.
And the twist is?
That there’s no need to painfully describe yourself for your profile. Instead your friends are responsible for highlighting all of your good bits, and possibly the bad bits too if you pick the wrong friend.
So if you don’t like writing about yourself, is this then the ideal dating site for you? I’m afraid you are just going to have to read my review to find out.
MySingleFriend is a dating site from the TV presenter Sarah Beeny, who I’ve actually never heard of till now, although that might be down to the fact that I don’t watch much TV. Do you know who she is?
Anyway, back in 2004 Sarah came up with the idea for a dating site – but with a twist. On most dating sites it’s all up to you to craft your online profile, and let’s face it, not many of us enjoy writing about ourselves do we?
But here the traditional approached is turned on its head, and it’s now the responsibility of your very own friends to write your profile. After all, they should know you better than anyone, possibly even better than you know yourself.
Site members are aged between 18 to 65 years old. Although the largest number of members can be found in the 18 to 40 age group.
Members here are primarily seeking a relationship that will last longer than a packet of pringles. So if you are not serious about dating, or only looking for some no-strings-attached fun, this is not the right place for you.

Creating Your Profile
Signing up is certainly not rocket science, the form you should be able to see below can be completed in less than a minute.
However, the second stage of signing up (where your profile is created) is a little different to what you might be used to from other dating sites. You still enter your basic details like: whether you are looking for a male or female, your age, location, and basic descriptive details like your height and hair colour. But this is where the similarities end.
The typical sign up process for most dating sites, is that you fill out a whole bunch of questions, then write a description about who you are and what you are looking for. But here, the description part is taken care of by your friends. All you need to do is enter the email address of the friend you wish to nominate to write your description, then make sure that you bribe them to write something nice about you.
Of course, you can also cheat if you would rather write your own description. There is nothing stopping you from entering an alternative email address to the one you have registered with, then completing your own description. But it would really defeat the whole purpose of the site.
You won’t find your typical user names on this site. Although you are given one, on the site only your first name is displayed. Personally I find it much nicer to communicate with people on a first name basis rather than a wacky username.
Until your friend writes your description, you will also be unable to make the most of the site. But you can still search through members on the site and read their profiles.
Features You’ll Find
When you log in for the first time – you’ll find all of the normal dating site features available at your fingertips. You can see who’s viewed your profile recently, write messages to other members, build a favourites list, and also block anyone who can’t take no for an answer.
There is also a very helpful one-to-one date coaching service available, further increasing your chances of successfully finding someone special.
The big feature of MySingleFriend is of course that all of your splendid character traits, and perhaps a few bad ones if you are unlucky, will be described by your very own friends. So if you have forgotten anyone’s birthday recently, you might not want to ask them to complete your profile.
Searching on the site is no different to any other dating site. The basic search bar is always present at the top of the website, and your default settings are usually filled in. So just hit the search bottom and all of the members meeting your criteria will be returned. And unlike on some sites, you can also view their photos before you upgrade to a paid member.
What about support for mobile? We know how important that is today! You’ll be glad to know the site is fully mobile optimized, you simply log in using your mobile browser. But there are no mobile apps available at this time.
The Traffic Test
Since this is a paid dating site, it’s really quite important to check the membership numbers in your area before you part with your hard earned pennies.
When I perform a quick and not too picky search of my local county (Worcestershire), for females between the ages of 25 and 33, there are over 300 profiles returned. I think this is more than enough potential dates for one person. And of course, you can also search further afield if you like.
However, unfortunately no information is provided as to when the members were last online. So it’s very possible that over 50% of the members are no longer using the service, and have just forgotten to remove their accounts. Most other dating sites do provide last logon details, so I’m a little sceptical as to why this is hidden here.
The Scam Test
Dating sites are unfortunately a popular target for scammers, both those originating from Nigeria and other far flung places, and also scams originating from the dating companies themselves. Unfortunately today many dating companies only care about making money, and they will use any means necessary to persuade non-paying members to take out a subscription.
Therefore, I always like to test how many scammers are present on the site by leaving my profile blank for a week and not uploading a photo. If messages are still received in this time, they are unlikely to be from genuine people. Since genuine members don’t send messages to people with blank profiles and no photo.
Unfortunately this test is a little difficult to perform on MySingleFriend, since your profile is not actually activated until your friend completes your description for you. So there’s no opportunity to leave it blank.
Still, I’ve now had my account on here for over 3 months, and I’ve not yet received any messages that I had reason to believe were not genuine. So I’m fairly confident that this dating site is above board, and that scammers are being taken care of fairly swiftly. That said, it’s still wise to trust your own instincts!
Joining is free, but I’m afraid this does not entitle you to much more than performing a search and viewing the profiles of existing members. To make the most out of the site, get to know people, and arrange dates, you will of course need to send and receive messages. And this is basically what paying for an upgraded membership entitles you to do. The costs for MySingleFriend in 2013 are:
£13.17 per month for a 6 month membership
£18.33 per month for a 3 month membership
£28.00 per month for a 1 month membership
Also please note, that if you subscribe to mysinglefriend.com you will automatically be re-billed at the end of your payment period (according to the payment option you opted for). I would recommend cancelling this ASAP, then simply renewing manually if you decide to stay for longer.
Good and Bad Points
Your friends write your description for you
Most site members are interested in finding someone for the long-term
Last logon date of members is hidden
Not as popular as other UK dating sites
Although I admit to having no idea who Sarah Beeny is; she has done a very good job at creating a dating site that stands out from the crowd, and also has a very loyal fan base.
Writing about yourself is always the most difficult part of setting up your profile, nobody enjoys this. And many people also fail to paint the best possible picture of themselves. Therefore asking your friends to write your profile is the ideal solution. Not only can they add anecdotes that you would probably never of thought about, but they will also highlight your most attractive qualities, qualities that you yourself may otherwise not have mentioned.
For a paid dating site, the prices are also very reasonable, if not some of the cheapest in the UK. My only criticism is in regards to them not displaying the last login date of their members. This makes it very difficult to get an accurate picture to how many members are actually active on the site.
To summarize: It might not be the most popular dating site in the UK, but www.mysinglefriend.com is certainly a dating site that’s worth a look in.
