You’ve heard the saying, “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach…”
It’s true. Totally true.
And ladies, let me tell you – taking the trouble to cook for your date is totally worth it.
I remember dating a guy for a while, then bringing him to my apartment for my first “home cooked” dinner date. When I presented him with the food and he took his first bite, he seemed surprised. “You COOK too?” As if cooking was a huge, huge bonus.
And guess what? Cooking for your date doesn’t have to be hard.
Whether you know how to make a gourmet meal, or you can just make toast, or you dream about cooking while watching the Food Network, never fear. Here are some recipes for the perfect dinner date.
In this blog post, we are using an Italian food theme. Hey, the Italians are romantic, right?
Before you begin, be sure to make plans for presentation. Dust off that table cloth, and get out the good dishes. Don’t forget a vase of flowers. Turn on some music. All the extra touches will make it a night to remember.
Now, onto cooking.
You’ll want a few finger foods on the table ready and waiting when your date arrives. Think small and tasty not messy to eat. Little crustinis would be a perfect appetizer.
Just grab some French bread, slice it, and put them on a cookie sheet. Brush with olive oil, then throw them in the oven (on broil) for 3 minutes. They’ll be perfectly toasted in no time! While they are cooling off, chop some tomatoes and put them in a bowl; add a dash of olive oil and garlic salt and pepper. Next, place the toasted bread on a pretty serving tray and top with tomatoes, a slice of fresh mozzarella cheese, and a few sprigs of fresh basil. Voila!
Pasta is a no brainer here. You’ve cooked pasta before, right? Just make sure to pick a fancy looking pasta, like bowtie. Cook it per package directions (make sure not to overcook). You have several options for toppings; maybe ask your date beforehand which he would prefer?
Basic Tomato Sauce – Of course, you could buy bottled pasta sauce, but this way can be so much tastier! Just buy regular plan tomato sauce (you’ll need a few cans), and add your own seasonings. Basil, oregano, salt, garlic, pepper. A little parmesan cheese wouldn’t hurt, either. Taste until you have it just right.
Basic Alfredo Sauce – Don’t buy bottled alfredo! Making it from scratch is much easier than you think. All you need is half a stick of butter, 1 cup of heavy cream, a few cloves of minced garlic, and some cheese. You can choose whatever cheese you like, though fresh parmesan is always tasty. Just mix all the ingredients in a saucepan until melted together. Done!
Meaty Add-ons – Cook some small meatballs (ground beef or sausage, or a mixture of the two), or small chunks of chicken.
Make sure to toss the pasta, sauce, and cooked meat together before your date arrives. You want the pasta to really soak up the flavors of the sauce and meat before you sit down to eat.
Add an easy side salad of lettuce, tomato, cucumber, olives and dressing, and you’re good to go.
Don’t skimp on dessert! Especially for a date, dessert can be a fun and sensual experience together. Stick with a simple and sure winner – brownies and vanilla ice cream. My mouth waters just thinking about it!
If you aren’t big on baking, find a boxed brownie mix (you’ll probably just need to add eggs and oil), or even pre-made brownies. Just make sure to heat them up right before serving. If you do want to bake brownies from scratch, Betty Crocker’s Ultimate Brownie is really good. I’ve made them hundreds of times.
Now just top the warm brownies with vanilla ice cream. Drizzle with some caramel sauce if you like!
With a meal like this, you’re sure to send a strong message to your date’s stomach and his heart!
