My mom always told me that a road trip was the ultimate test for couples. If you can survive a road trip, you can survive anything.
Because road trips are like mini life packed into one weekend. Lots of hope, but lost of disappointments. Millions of little decisions and several big decisions. Money, food, sleep, important life goals.
Road trips are definitely not for wimps.
Still, I absolutely love road trips! I’ve been on all kinds. Of course, the most typical are the ones where everything seems to go wrong.
You know the typical road trip I’m talking about. You get excited just talking about how you’ll see this, and it’ll be so much fun to get away. Only, things go wrong. Flat tire, wrong turn, a sudden thunderstorm, a weird hotel… still, you forge ahead because that’s what you do on a road trip.
If you and your significant other can get through a road trip where things go wrong and you STILL had fun, then that is a good sign.
If you are thinking about going on a road trip with your honey but aren’t sure where to go, here are some destination ideas based on different categories:
Love the Outdoors
If this describes you and your mate, then hit up one of many of the National Parks. They are some of the most amazing places in the United States! Yellowstone, Redwoods, Alcatraz, the Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde, Mammonth Caves, and so much more! You can camp, or grab a hotel. Especially at the more popular areas, there are usually lots of places to stay. But if you are going in the busy season, be sure to reserve your spots early. Even camping spots go quick.
Did you know there are designated Scenic Byways all over the country? Basically, they are beautiful places to drive through. What could be better for a road trip? Check out the American’s Byways website and click on the map for ideas. Lots of beautiful mountain passes, or ocean-side drives. Decide which byway to tour, then find fun stops and places to eat and stay along the way.
What sorts of things happened in your region in years gone by? Take a road trip to a museum and check out historical sites for a more educational tour. Be it important battles, old ships, the Hoover Dam, Lincoln’s home–the destinations can be fun to explore and learn about. What is within a few hours of where you live but you haven’t seen yet?
Theme parks, zip lining, bungee jumping, cliff jumping–all can be within reach via a road trip! So find your thrill and plot your course. If only one of you seeks the risky type stuff, then make sure to find other stuff you can do together. Maybe a water park is more your partner’s style.
Sometimes a road trip is really just about getting from point A to point B. Your final destination could be a sporting event, like professional or college ball, or a concert by a famous musician. Whatever you choose, if you’re the type who loves to just get in the car and go, you’re sure to have a great time. Be sure to pack lots of snacks so you don’t have to stop as much. You could even rent a camper if you’d rather skip a hotel. Just make sure to reserve a spot at a campground.
Romantic Road Trip
Really, any road trip can be romantic if you make it that way. But if romance is the main goal, then finding the right setting is what it’s all about. Bed and breakfasts are great places for couples looking for quaint and romantic spots. They are usually unique rooms in historic homes with beautiful grounds, close to fun stuff to do. As you call to make reservations, ask the owners for ideas on what to do, just in case you want to leave your room.
